ABOUT US
Students for Shelters UTSC is acknowledged student group and a new chapter associated to the Students for Shelters, a not-for-profit organization, operated on the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus. We are acknowledged through the University of Toronto Union and ULife. Our aim as a group is to encourage the university community to donate small supplies and take local action as part of organizations that aren't often brought to attention or considered. We also take part in various other forms of action to raise awareness and act in solidarity with individuals in need. Our community unites students from numerous, different background and connect them together under one common goal - taking the time to help others. And, of course, we hope to create a long-lasting impact on students and others' lives in a positive manner.
We recognize and respect the traditional territory we operate on, as this land has an entwined and extended history holding onto the vast stories of the Seneca, Huron-Wendat, and the Mississaugas of the Credit River nations. Toronto and the Mississaugas of the New Credit First have a treaty together, and Toronto is also pertained with the Dish With One Spoon agreement to share the land between two specific Indigenous nations, the Anishinaabek and the Haudenosaunee. In present-day, this place of gathering is thus far the home to several First Nations peoples from beyond Turtle Island and we are indebted to have the chance to work on this land. We pursue to enhance the Silver Covenant Chain and to recover the relationship with the initial peoples of this land to help with proceeding towards reconciliation and one contingent on profound dignity and honour.
